This Netflix documentary is a must-see! Wow, wow, wow. Compelling, convicting and leaves you feeling like flushing your phone down the loo.
But in all seriousness, the data is scary. I now feel like a social media lab rat. We (I) are in a generation where we have never had such crazy exposure to phones. And despite social media companies wanting us to believe there are loads of benefits, they are harming us in ways we don't realise.
Of course, the obvious ones are the blue night making you stay awake at night, the addiction and the distraction. But the less obvious is how these phones are shaping us. They are destroying our identity, our friendships and our health.
I loved how they wove a real-life drama into the interviews and made them so relatable.
But the biggest takeaway was that the companies only care about making money. They are studying you and feeding you things that aren't good for you but will entice you and make you feel discontent. They don't care about the damage. They don't care about you.
I can't end this all doom and gloom, so what's the answer? Well, I think I learned that the first step is awareness. Once you know something is damaging, you can do something about it. The second thing is setting limits like leaving a phone downstairs on charge. Setting goals and boundaries and healthy habits. Also, taking up other hobbies and sports actively distracts you from the screen. Learning to look up and out and talk with your friends, not just text them.
